Has tech become a new addiction? Have we become slaves to our own creation?

The human being is the most needy creature to exist on the earth. Man’s primary goal has always been to achieve the greatest comfort and technology has played a major role in fulfilling that need. Ever since the stone age and the invention of the wheel, man has striven to make life easier. Needless to say, technology has also fallen under the category of “Make better”. Technology is now fully integrated in our day to day lives.

Two decades ago, new technology was something that everyone wanted but couldn’t afford. Now, we see technology everywhere and with everyone. Humans require technology for everything in their lives. From using alarms to wake up in the morning to using soothing natural sounds to fall asleep at night, technology has inter-wound itself with each aspect of our lives. In the last decade alone, we’ve witnessed evolution of artificial intelligence, creation of self driving cars, the introduction of under display fingerprint scanners, invention of fold-able displays and even refrigerators which automatically order groceries when they’re low.

For all the good that technology has done, there’s a ton of proof to say that we have become slave to our own creation. We see people walking the streets while engrossed in their phones. We have family dinners where everyone is on their phones. People sit in various rooms of the same house and communicate through tech rather than talking face to face.We see new parents giving their babies phones or tablets to get them to stop crying. We’ve see cases where children feel ignored because their parents were too involved with their phones.

Technology has developed from “something that exists” to “something that is essential” in the past two decades and there’s no denying the fact that we humans are addicted to it. Technology has grown at an astonishingly fast rate and there’s no signs of slowing down. The only way to control our addiction is through self control which is something that us humans are not very good at. When we talk about technology, there’s always more.
